teach-in

I participated in several the Teach-Ins of the late sixties. They were learning events that engaged me. I hope these Teach-Ins are just as engaging, subversive and useful to you.

Buyer Be Aware: Life Insurance

Life insurance can be important; getting it right isn't always easy.

  • Life insurance can be complex, with many riders and other features.
  • Policies are written in arcane, specialized language.
  • Your "translator", the agent, does not work for you.
  • Insurance companies, even big ones, can have tacky and misleading practices.

In two hours, we will cover basic policy types, different methods used to figure out how large a policy to buy, and tax considerations. We will talk about what life insurance companies don't want you to know about their products. (This is the subversive part.) You will be able to go into a sales situation prepared. If we have time, we can look at a policy that you have or are considering.

Annuities: "buy in haste, repent at leisure."

In these tough times, buying an annuity may seem like a safe choice. This is often not true. In two hours, you will understand why. There are many things that agents won't tell you when they are selling annuities.

  • How annuities work.
  • Tax effects.
  • Guarantees may not be enough.
  • The special circumstances where annuities are best.
  • The disadvantages can be high expenses, surrender charges, poor returns, interest rate and inflation risks.
  • How to get out of a bad annuity.
  •

Date: Saturday, October 2nd. Time: 2:00 to 4:00 P. M. at King County Library Shoreline Branch, 345 175th, Shoreline, WA 98155. Admission is free with complimentary coffee. A donation of two cans of food would be fab.
